'Washington's Next Great Wine - Malbec'

Dry Falls 2008 Wahluke Slope Malbec, $28.  This Malbec exhibits the sheer aroma of cocoa, coconut, and almonds, followed by dark cherry and smoky spice.  The rich bold taste makes this perfect with beef.  The finish references almonds and black raspberries and is wonderful with dark chocolate and a good book.

Dry Falls Cellars 2007 Barbera

Appellation: Wahluke Slope

Jim Englar leads this family-focused winery near the abandoned Japan Air Lines hangar in Moses Lake, and he works in small lots with distinctive results. Here's a collaboration with Rosebud Ranch for a lively version of an Italian variety that profiles bright red fruit. Aromas of strawberries, sweet cherries and slate funnel into a juicy and complex structure dominated by pie cherries with the acidity to match. Red currants and green peppercorns fill in the edges of a wine that screams for richly structured food. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine.

Price: $25.

Cases produced: 55.

Food matches: Pair this rich wine with roasted duck or a meatball pizza.

Dry Falls Cellars
2007 Cinsault

"...sweet cherries, raspberries and cranberries with a nice crushed leaf component and cinnamon.  It's a lighter style with a broad structure and bold flavors of cranberries, rhubarb, cherries and ripe plums.  Earthiness and acidity show on the palate rather than oak and tannin."

Ten Best New Washington Wineries!

Once again, the new crop of Washington wineries produced some perfect wine in the perfect climate. It was difficult to narrow this list down to ten so some excellent new wineries may have been left out. The wineries listed here are in no particular order and are not ranked. Some are newer than others. Some have just barely gotten off the ground.

1) Dry Falls
2) Parejas
3) Palouse
4) Adams Bench
5) Hestia
6) Stomani
7) Horan
8) Norton Arnold
9) Pondera
10) Gilbert

  • Evergreen Wine Cellars in Snohomish, WA, August 2008
"Saturday brought us Dry Falls Cellars out of Moses Lake. I'm telling
you folks......keep an eye out for these guys. They have some limited
wines in the barrel coming up that are to die for! Or at least worth
getting scratched up for to get in line to get them. We barrel tasted the
07 Cinsault, Barbera and Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvigon.........right
there in the OMG class....stay tuned. Meanwhile, the current release of
Old Vine Chardonnay (a sweet chard, by the way with 2% residual sugar but
a crisp finish) was a big winner, as were the regular and Reserve
Tempranillo. Finishing with dessert with the Late Harvest Chardonnay-a
lovely sticky wine but not too cloying. Perfect for that creme brulee or
pear tart or heck, who needs food, ya know!"
